Kumbh, A Ritual Encompassing Hindu Philosophy and Its Doctrine

Updated: 6 days ago

Hindu philosophy stands on the solid ground of the logic of the spiritual doctrine that indicates the Karma of human beings. In the context of Hindu philosophy, the concept of Karma plays a central role during the Kumbh festival that we recently experienced. Karma, which literally means "action," encompasses the moral implications of one’s deeds, thoughts, and intentions. It emphasizes that every action has a consequence, shaping the individual’s future experiences. This fundamental doctrine encourages participants at Kumbh Mela to engage in self-reflection, repentance, and a commitment to improving one's moral standing.

In Hindu spiritualism, the three powerful nerves in the human body represent the three sacred rivers: Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. Those three rivers meet at a specific point in the human body, just as we can see in Prayagraj. The name of that meeting point is Triveni, which is the same meeting point of three nerves of the human body. For a saint or devotee, it's a secret point of starting the holy travel to reach the almighty creator or, in another sense, it's a start to be a noble person. In my recently finished painting of the Kumbh ritual, I showed that secret fact.

Abstract art with orange geometric figures, a hand holding prayer beads, red circle, white triangle, swastika, and blue background. All represent a holy spirit of the ritual of Kumbh.

In the Kumbh, we have experienced millions of saints gathered to take the holy bath in Triveni. Because they are on the way of the holy travel as I said, and some of them are reached their destination. It proves that the above-stated philosophy is not just an imagination. Rather, it stands on solid ground. It’s an inspiration for common individuals and devotees gathered in the Kumbh Mela. The saints, by their very presence, exemplify the ideals of selfless service and detachment from material desires. They inspire devotees to adhere to the principles of Karma and Dharma, motivating individuals to strive for spiritual upliftment. It’s the primary factor to start the holy travel. These saints often embody the teachings of Hindu philosophy, acting as guides for the millions seeking wisdom and enlightenment. Their discourses provide insights into the nature of life, the importance of righteous actions, and the power of devotion. In my painting, I depicted a saint chanting in his holy chain silently to demonstrate how someone can reach his extreme destination by concentrating on his holy Karma.

A devotee is standing in the water of the river of Kumbh and seeking blass to God with folded hands and closed eyes. She is making prayer.
A devotee seeking bless to God.

As participants immerse themselves in the holy waters, they seek not only ritualistic purification but also an opportunity to cleanse their past actions. The act of bathing in the sacred rivers conjoint in Triveni symbolizes a fresh start from the inner Triveni located in every human body. It’s a reaffirmation of their commitment to living a life aligned with dharma (righteousness). This spiritual practice provides a platform to confront personal karma and fosters a sense of collective responsibility toward a more compassionate existence.

Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, is not just a mere festival but a profound expression of Hindu philosophy and spirituality. Millions of devotees from diverse backgrounds come together every twelve years to participate in this grand event, seeking spiritual purification and enlightenment. Through the lens of Hindu philosophy, the Kumbh Mela serves as a reminder of the deeper principles governing existence, particularly the doctrine of Karma, which forms the foundation of ethical and spiritual practices in Hinduism. It's a Ritual Encompassing Hindu Philosophy and Its Doctrine, which inspired me to create this painting.

What's your opinion on the recent ritual of Kumbh? Did you visit there? Share your experience with me. Thank you.

You’re great at taking abstract concepts and making them feel real and relatable. The way you explain things clearly, shows how well you know the topic and how great you are at communicating it. It’s inspiring to read your work and see how you capture your audience’s attention and make them think. Truly outstanding!

Before reading your write-up, I didn’t know much about the Kumbh Mela. It was all a bit confusing to me. But after going through your explanation, everything makes so much more sense. You made it easy to understand,…

Whenever I look at your work, I see amazing things, amazing art. Like the Grease calendar featuring your art, your books, and every time we talk, I learn something new. And now, seeing your painting and writing about Prayagraj, it feels great, sir. You're sitting in a Bengal village, and the whole world is getting to know you. This is not just art; your talent is what's making the whole world take notice of you
